Be your own hero.

my work

I was lying on the ground. I wanted to stay there and just fade away. I tried to get up so many times and when I think I was finally doing it, I fall down again. Why bother?

I looked up, people was passing by. Most of them didn't seem to see me but one or two of them was looking down at me, annoyed.

'Come on, try!' they said. 'You should at least try.'

They then walked off leaving me here. I pushed myself up again, there were scratches and bruises on my knee and arm but it was well hidden, even I forgotten I got them. I walked slowly at first, terrified I fall again.

Now and then I get those stares, the type of stares that seemed to judge me like I was being stupid or pathetic, maybe I was.

I was running now. I smiled, maybe I could get the hang of it. But as soon as I thought that, I fell down again but this time someone held on to me. She was holding my arm, I would have hit my head on the ground if she didn't.

She helped me up and patted me on the shoulder. I stared at her in awe. She had cuts and scars all over her arm and face but she had the brightest smile like it didn't bother her. She had a gold medal around her neck, the word SURVIVED carved on it.

Unlike the rest of us she was heading the other direction, which only meant one thing, she gave up... or she already reached the top.

'Where will you go now?' I asked.

'On another adventure.' She it said so simply like it was that easy but from the looks of it, it wasn't but you could see the determination in her eyes like nothing could scare her off.

'Wasn't it hard?'

'It gets easier. It's normal to stumble and fall a couple of times, it's part of life.'

'I-I can't do it.' I stammered as she laid her hand on my shoulder and looked me in the eye. It was a wierd feeling, I barely knew her but it felt like she understand how I felt and probably went through the same thing.

'I believe you can.' She whispered. I looked up at her to check if I heard correctly but the way she looked at me was like she did, truly, believe I could. Usually if people said this I'd never believe them, they always had this look of sympathy in their eyes like they didn't expect much from me.

'My adventure only just started.'

She then walked away, and vanished. I turned around and looked ahead, I still couldn't see a finish line. People was passing by.

I saw a girl fall down and ran over to her to help pick her up. She looked at me puzzled.

'You can do it.' I said and I saw her eyes shone or it could be just my imagination.

She smiled at me, 'Thank you.'

I kept on walking ahead. It isn't over...

'Why do I try?
I know I'm gonna fall down,
I thought I could fly,
So why did I drown?'
